By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): It is over. The criminal case against Mr. Alberto August has been discontinued, following a directive from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
The Belize Police Department confirmed the development in a release, stating that on June 30, 2026, it received a memorandum from the DPP regarding the proceedings against August. The case had arisen from a complaint made by Oscar Mira.
According to the police, having reviewed the case file, the Director of Public Prosecutions directed that the prosecution be discontinued. In line with that directive, the Belize Police Department will now discontinue the prosecution of the matter. All property retained during the course of the investigation is to be returned to its lawful owner or owners.
The outcome brings to a close a case that had drawn significant public attention. August had been charged under the Cybercrime Act, a matter that had been widely seen as connected to the broader controversy surrounding Mira.
The decision also follows the move by acting Minister of Home Affairs Julius Espat, who earlier directed that the file be handed over to the DPP for an independent determination, rather than being handled internally by the police. At the time, Espat said the goal was to ensure the matter was dealt with in the fairest and most independent way possible, noting that the DPP, as the authority constitutionally responsible for prosecutions, should decide whether the charges proceeded. With the DPP now directing that the prosecution be discontinued, that is exactly the path the case has taken.
