“It was just time”: Espat explains Gamboa’s transfer after 11 years at SPU

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Minister of Home Affairs Julius Espat says the transfer of Superintendent Aaron Gamboa from the Special Patrol Unit came down to management, not misconduct.

Gamboa led the SPU for 11 years, possibly a record for any police unit in Belize. He was moved with immediate effect on Monday.

Speaking to 7 News via Zoom, Espat said Gamboa is already officially retired and had been serving on an extension.

“He has been officially retired for, I think, six months now, if I’m not mistaken, and he was given an extension,” Espat said. “But if you have to plan for the future, you have to be able to look at things and bring in new people.”

He said the Commissioner recommended the transfer to a more administrative position.

“SPU for 11 years, that’s a good run. And we need other people now to have an opportunity.”

Espat was clear on his reasoning.

“There’s no bad intention in this move. But change is necessary, especially in the Police Department, it’s necessary to not have a commander in one position for too long.”
