By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Amir ‘KingMir’ Rudon came out victorious in his Super Lightweight bout against Guatemalan pugilist Juan ‘El Toro’ Méndez on Saturday night at Swift Hall in Belize City.

Twenty-three-year-old Rudon won the main bout in the international boxing card, put together by Tres Reyes Promotions under the aegis of the Belize Boxing Development Council, with a unanimous decision. All three judges saw him as the winner, voting 58-56, 58-56, and 58-57 in his favor.

Rudon won rounds one and three outright, with all the judges voting for him unanimously. The other rounds were split in the judges’ view.

Rudon continues his undefeated run and now has seven professional wins, three by knockout, under his belt. Méndez now has eight wins, seven by knockout, and four losses

“I think it was a good test for me as I was going up against one of the best fighters out of Guatemala, one of the best coaches from Guatemala,” Rudon told Breaking Belize News on Sunday.

“It was definitely a great test to show what Belize has on the horizon, how high our goal is. We’re right on mark with everything.”

Rudon said the fight played out as he expected. He highlighted his strategy of staying close to Méndez, a pressure fighter, and effectively countering his attacks.

“I wasn’t surprised with the way any of the rounds went because I knew his style, I knew what he was coming with,” Rudon said.

“The first round basically was a feel-out round, being cautious and everything, and then from round two up to six was me being right there in his face, making myself comfortable in a situation where he wouldn’t like for me to be comfortable, because he is a pressure fighter. He loves to bully other fighters and to wear them down, but I stood right there, sometimes my back against the ropes. But, I was comfortable, you know, riding along, bobbing and weaving under the shots, picking my shots in between, touching the body. And then, I would circle around. It was a good fight. It was really a good fight and I knew he was durable, so it would have gone the distance.”

Rudon fared relatively well, claiming Méndez didn’t hurt him.

“I didn’t feel any pain, honestly speaking,” the Belizean boxer said.

“A lot of the shots, like, rode off. I rolled with the shots so I didn’t take full impact. It was evident that there was a cut on his face. One of his eyes was a bit swollen.

“Today I woke up without any pain, any bruises, any cuts. By the grace of God, I thank him for keeping me safe.”

Rudon said he was also thankful for his corner, particularly Coach Titus out of Houston and cutman Koby Mayen, who did a good job keeping him well-grounded.

Rudon was also thankful to the Belizean fans, who he said have been very supportive.

“I personally would like to thank the Belize public and community for the continued support,” Rudon said.

Rudon said that he’s now looking forward to another fight in September, although an opponent has not yet been identified. In the meantime, he’ll continue training at Alpha Boxing Club on Cleghorn St. in Belize City.

The judges were Javier Romero and Tomas Serrut from San Ignacio, and Luis Oliva from Santa Elena, Cayo.
