By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Isaias is now a hurricane, but forecasters say it is not expected to directly impact Belize.

At 6:00am, Hurricane Isaias was centred near latitude 23.7 North, longitude 90.6 West, about 175 miles north northwest of Progreso, Mexico.

The hurricane was moving east northeast at 9 mph, with maximum sustained winds of 80 mph.

Isaias strengthened from a tropical storm, which was packing 40 mph winds on Wednesday, as it tracked across the Gulf of Mexico.

The National Meteorological Service says the system is not expected to have a direct impact on Belize. Residents are still encouraged to follow official updates.

Locally, relatively moist and unstable conditions remain over the region. Today will be sunny with cloudy intervals. Showers and thunderstorms will be isolated, but a few are likely over the west this afternoon.

The outlook for Thursday night and Friday calls for similar conditions.
