By Zoila Palma: Miss Universe Belize Isabella Zabaneh is receiving widespread praise after proudly representing the country at the 74th Miss Universe Pageant in Bangkok, Thailand.
Among those commending her performance is journalist Holly Edgell, who shared a heartfelt public message applauding Zabaneh’s poise, resilience, and character throughout the competition.
Edgell described Zabaneh as the embodiment of grace, noting that she carried herself with the confidence of a woman who “gave her all” and whose future holds great promise. “Take a bow Bella Zabaneh! Belize is PROUD!” she wrote.
Edgell acknowledged the ongoing debates surrounding international pageants but highlighted the opportunities, friendships, and global networks they create for participants. She also pointed out the complex factors that influence finalist selections, including market size, brand visibility, and strategic decisions by organizers—elements that often lead to strong representation from Asia and Latin America, with Africa’s presence rising in recent years.
Edgell further noted the unusual development this year of several judges withdrawing before the pageant due to discomfort with aspects of the judging process. This raised broader questions about how finalists are chosen, the criteria applied, and the level of guidance provided to judges during the preliminary rounds.
Edgell stressed that all contestants, including Zabaneh, are “beautiful and worthy” and benefit immensely from the exposure and opportunities that Miss Universe brings.
Despite the controversies and high-stakes nature of the pageant, Belizeans have united in celebrating Zabaneh’s representation—honoring her grace, authenticity, and the pride she brought to the country on the world stage.
