Is your teen’s lunch money buying roses? One Belizean mother says enough

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A concerned parent is speaking out after learning that a popular high school in San Ignacio is selling Valentine’s Day roses and chocolates to students and charging a fee to deliver them to girlfriends and boyfriends during school hours.

The parent said her 14 year old child came home requesting that his lunch money be held until Valentine’s Day so he could purchase items being sold at school. She described the situation as troubling and believes it sends the wrong message to students between the ages of 13 and 17.

According to the parent, schools should be focused on education, personal development, and preparing students for the future rather than encouraging romantic relationships at such a young age.

She also expressed concern about broader social issues, noting that Belize already struggles with teen pregnancy and school dropouts. She believes activities like these may contribute to students shifting their focus away from academics too early.

The parent is urging school administrators to reconsider how fundraising is approached and to ensure that education remains the top priority.
