iPhone scam claims another customer

By Aaron Humes: Police are investigating a report of obtaining money transfer by deception.

A Belize City resident reported that while browsing on Facebook on Sunday, January 11, she came across a post from another user advertising an iPhone 17 Pro Max for sale for $2,850.

She agreed to send the owner of the post $500 cash and her own iPhone 14 Plus valued at $800 and in return would receive the phone from San Pedro Town via Tropic Air to Belize City. A phone number message provide the information of a bank account to which the money should be sent.

On Tuesday, January 13, just before noon, the complainant made an online transfer of $500 between her bank account and the account shared with her, then messaged the aforementioned number through WhatsApp showing the transaction. A few hours later she was sent a picture of a receipt showing that the iPhone had been sent as asked, but when she checked with Tropic Air Cargo she was informed that there was no package there for her and that her receipt appeared faked.

The complainant subsequently made several attempts to get in contact with the person through WhatsApp and the Facebook account, but was unsuccessful up to the time of making her report.
