International News: Zelensky and Trump clash in White House, sparking fierce reactions across U.S. Lawmakers

By Zoila Palma: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and U.S. President Donald Trump had a tense confrontation during a White House meeting on Friday, sparking widespread reactions from lawmakers and officials, Reuters report.

U.S. National Security Advisor Mike Waltz criticized Zelensky for downplaying American contributions to Ukraine’s defense, while Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro condemned the attack on Zelensky, emphasizing the importance of advancing American values and holding Russia accountable for the war’s start.

State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce noted that Ukraine’s future decisions should remain in its hands, suggesting Zelensky reconsider his position. Republican Rep. Michael McCaul urged Zelensky to sign a key economic deal with the U.S., while Senator Lindsey Graham expressed dismay over Zelensky’s actions in the Oval Office, calling it disrespectful.

Democrats were equally critical, with House Leader Hakeem Jeffries calling the meeting an embarrassment for the U.S. and an opportunity for Russian President Vladimir Putin to capitalize on the discord. Senator Jack Reed and Rep. Gregory Meeks also condemned the confrontation, arguing that it weakened American leadership and emboldened Putin.

In the wake of the meeting, the split among U.S. lawmakers underscored the deep political divisions on how to handle the war in Ukraine.
