By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Some users on X are reportedly earning “thousands of dollars” by sharing election misinformation, AI-generated images, and conspiracy theories, the BBC reports.
According to the report, networks of accounts that repeatedly reshare each other’s posts—mixing true and false content—to increase visibility and revenue are using X.
Many users coordinate through forums, claiming earnings from hundreds to thousands of dollars.
They include supporters of both Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, with some even receiving outreach from U.S. politicians seeking promotional posts.
On October 9, X changed its payment structure, basing earnings on engagement from premium users rather than ad views.
Unlike other social media platforms, X lacks strict rules against misinformation, raising concerns about the potential influence on political discourse.
In addition, the report found misleading claims, including election fraud and conspiracy theories, are commonly spread. Some posts have even crossed over to larger platforms like Facebook and TikTok.
