By Zoila Palma: U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to enter a two-week ceasefire with Iran has drawn support from several world leaders, following mediation efforts led by Shehbaz Sharif.
The agreement came after Sharif urged Washington to delay further military action while negotiations continue between both sides, Fox reports.
Trump said the United States would help manage traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy route that had been effectively shut down by Iran earlier in the conflict. The waterway typically carries around 20 million barrels of oil per day, along with a significant share of the world’s liquefied natural gas, making its reopening a key element of the ceasefire.
Leaders from multiple countries, including Israel, Germany, the United Kingdom and Australia, welcomed the agreement.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel supports US efforts to ensure Iran no longer poses a threat, but emphasized that the ceasefire does not extend to Lebanon, where Israeli operations against Hezbollah will continue.
Despite the agreement, tensions remain high across the region. Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates reported fresh Iranian drone attacks today targeting infrastructure and oil facilities. Iran has continued striking neighboring countries during the broader military campaign known as Operation Epic Fury.
At the White House, press secretary Karoline Leavitt described reports of Iran closing the Strait of Hormuz as “completely unacceptable,” stating that the US expects the waterway to be reopened quickly and safely. She added that private communications indicated progress, despite conflicting public statements.
