By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed regret over the United States’ announcement that it will withdraw from the organization.

On his first day in office, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order for the United States to withdraw from the World Health Organization.

In a press release on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, WHO emphasized its critical role in protecting global health and security, including that of Americans. The organization highlighted its efforts in addressing disease causes, building stronger health systems, and responding to health emergencies.

The statement said that as a founding member of the world organization in 1948, the United States has significantly contributed to its work alongside the other 193 members.

“For over seven decades, WHO and the USA have saved countless lives and protected Americans and all people from health threats,” WHO said.

“Together, we ended smallpox, and together we have brought polio to the brink of eradication. American institutions have contributed to and benefited from membership in WHO.

WHO also pointed out that American institutions have both contributed to and benefited from WHO membership.

The World Health Organization said it hopes the United States will reconsider its decision and looks forward to maintaining their partnership for the health and well-being of millions globally.

“We hope the United States will reconsider and we look forward to engaging in constructive dialogue to maintain the partnership between the USA and WHO, for the benefit of the health and well-being of millions of people around the globe,” WHO said.

Trump said WHO has ripped off the United States blaming the organization of corruption. But WHO fired back saying “over the past 7 years implemented the largest set of reforms in its history, to transform our accountability, cost-effectiveness, and impact in countries.”

Trump has also blamed the WHO of mishandling the COVID-19 pandemic and helping China cover its tracks.
