By Zoila Palma: Health authorities in India have placed a 28-year-old woman in quarantine in Bengaluru after she was identified as a suspected Ebola case following her arrival from Uganda.
Officials said the woman travelled through Ahmedabad before reaching Bengaluru and later developed body ache.
An initial sample sent to the National Institute of Virology in Pune tested negative for Ebola. However, health officials said the woman will remain in isolation and undergo a second test after 48 hours before being cleared for release, in accordance with established health protocols, The Independent reports.
The health alert comes a day after Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda stated that India had recorded no Ebola cases linked to the current Bundibugyo outbreak affecting Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The outbreak has been declared a public health emergency of international concern by the World Health Organization. India last reported an Ebola case during a previous outbreak in 2014, 12 years ago.
Anul Kumar Banagar, medical superintendent of the state-run Epidemic Diseases Hospital, said the woman showed no symptoms during airport screening on arrival in India. He explained that district surveillance teams and airport health officials had been monitoring her due to her recent travel from an Ebola-affected country.
“She developed a mild body ache nearly 24 hours later, following which samples were collected and sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune,” Dr. Banagar said.
Authorities said surveillance and screening measures are being intensified in coordination with Karnataka state officials and in line with World Health Organization guidelines, while urging the public not to panic or spread misinformation.
