By Zoila Palma: Wildfires raging across southern Europe have killed three firefighters and forced about 12,000 people to evacuate as flames continue to spread through parts of France, Italy and Spain.
Two firefighters died while battling a blaze near Bordeaux, France, while a third was killed and another injured while fighting a major fire in Sicily, Italy, Yahoo reports.
In southwestern France, nearly 6,000 acres have burned west of Bordeaux, prompting authorities to order about 10,000 people to leave their homes.
Around 500 firefighters were deployed to tackle the blaze, which began near the town of Saumos and was moving southwest. Several roads were closed, while firefighting aircraft were being sent to assist crews on the ground.
The French department of Var, along the Côte d’Azur between Marseille and Nice, has also been heavily affected, with thousands of acres destroyed.
Some evacuated residents were allowed to return home Thursday, but authorities warned them to limit movement because strong winds could cause the flames to flare up again. In Sicily, thousands were also evacuated as about 6,000 firefighters, forestry officers and civil protection personnel worked to contain several major fires.
Spain has also been battling dangerous wildfires, with footage showing Civil Guard officers going door-to-door to evacuate residents near Madrid.
The latest fires follow a massive blaze in Guadalajara province that burned nearly 80,000 acres and a deadly wildfire in Almería that killed at least 11 people.
