By Zoila Palma:  The White House on Monday rejected Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’s offer to hold talks with U.S. President Donald Trump, dismissing a letter in which Maduro urged dialogue and denied U.S. allegations linking him to drug trafficking.

According to AFP, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt described the Venezuelan leader’s message as containing “a lot of lies” and reaffirmed Washington’s position that Maduro’s government remains “illegitimate.”

The exchange comes during heightened tensions, with the U.S. recently deploying eight warships and a submarine to the Caribbean in what it calls an anti-drug operation.

Maduro, whose 2024 reelection was widely denounced as fraudulent by the opposition and much of the international community, accused Washington of using the military buildup as a cover for regime change.

His defense minister claimed that U.S. forces have waged “an undeclared war” in the Caribbean, pointing to the destruction of Venezuelan boats and the deaths of more than a dozen people. In response, thousands of Venezuelans have joined civilian militias at Maduro’s urging to bolster defenses, while he vowed to keep sending letters to Trump to “defend the truth of Venezuela.”

The opposition, however, is divided over the U.S. strategy.

Exiled candidate Edmundo González Urrutia, recognized by Washington as Venezuela’s legitimate leader, welcomed the deployment, calling it necessary to dismantle what he described as Maduro’s “criminal structure.”

Opposition leader María Corina Machado also endorsed the U.S. stance, warning that Venezuelan gangs pose a “real and growing threat” to regional security.
