By Zoila Palma: WhatsApp has launched a new “incognito” mode for conversations with its AI chatbot, allowing users to hold private chats that the company says even it cannot access.
The feature means conversations and responses from the AI will not be monitored once the mode is activated, and past chats will disappear from the user’s device.
Will Cathcart, head of WhatsApp, said the feature was introduced because many users want to discuss sensitive topics such as health, finances and relationships with AI tools without worrying that their conversations could later be viewed. He said people wanted “private conversations with AI” while still receiving answers from the chatbot.
The messaging platform, owned by Meta Platforms, said the technology behind the new feature is different from WhatsApp’s existing end-to-end encryption system, though Cathcart described it as “the equivalent.” Mark Zuckerberg said the service would become “the first major AI product where there is no log of your conversations stored on servers.”
Cyber security experts, however, have raised concerns about accountability if problems arise.
The announcement comes as Meta continues expanding its AI operations across its platforms, including Facebook, Instagram and Messenger.
