By Zoila Palma: World leaders are gathering at the United Nations this week as ongoing wars, artificial intelligence risks, climate change, and global economic pressures take center stage during the annual General Assembly meeting.

Conflicts in Gaza, Ukraine, Iran, Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Myanmar are expected to feature prominently in discussions, with leaders facing questions about how international cooperation can help end violence and address humanitarian crises.

Climate-related disasters, rising living costs, disrupted shipping routes, and growing inequalities are also expected to shape the agenda, AP reports.

Meanwhile, concerns over the potential dangers of rapidly advancing artificial intelligence have added to discussions about global security and humanity’s future.

The future of the United Nations is also expected to come under scrutiny, including proposals to reform institutions such as the Security Council, where the United States, Russia, China, Britain, and France hold veto power.

The selection of a successor to Secretary-General António Guterres, whose second term ends on December 31, 2026, is another issue drawing attention. The 81st General Assembly’s official theme is “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”

Despite the divisions and challenges facing the international community, the United Nations remains a key platform for dialogue among its 193 member states.

The high-level debate, scheduled to begin on September 22, provides an opportunity for world leaders to discuss cooperation, peace, development, and collective responses to global crises.
