By Zoila Palma: Voters across the United States are heading to the polls in the 2026 midterm elections, with control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate at stake.
Democrats are hoping to regain control of both chambers in an election widely viewed as a referendum on President Donald Trump’s policies, with the economy and the war in Iran emerging as key issues for voters.
Recent polling suggests Democrats are well-positioned to retake the House, while control of the Senate could depend on several closely contested races in traditionally Republican states. The outcome will shape the remainder of Trump’s presidency and determine how easily his administration can advance its legislative agenda during the next two years, NBC reports.
The election has also unfolded amid political tensions and legal scrutiny.
The U.S. Justice Department is reportedly sending 20 target letters as part of a criminal investigation involving the Dan J. Sullivan campaign in Alaska, separate from a civil lawsuit concerning the state’s Senate race.
In Michigan, Democratic Representative Ro Khanna criticized Representative Haley Stevens for endorsing Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers instead of Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed.
As ballots are counted, the results are expected to determine the balance of power in Congress and influence the direction of U.S. domestic and foreign policy.
