By Zoila Palma:  Delcy Rodríguez, who has assumed the role of Venezuela’s acting president following the capture of Nicolás Maduro, struck a conciliatory tone toward the United States on Monday, calling for cooperation even as President Donald Trump asserted Washington’s control over the country and demanded sweeping access to its resources.

In her first public statement since taking office, Rodríguez extended what she described as an invitation to Washington to work together “on a cooperative agenda, oriented toward shared development, within the framework of international law.”

Writing on Instagram, she said Venezuela’s priority was to build a “balanced and respectful” relationship with the United States and neighboring countries, based on sovereign equality and non-interference.

Her remarks came less than two days after the U.S. military operation in Caracas that led to Maduro’s removal.

Rodríguez’s message marked a notable shift from the traditionally confrontational rhetoric used by Venezuela’s ruling movement against the United States, EL Pais reports.

While acknowledging that the country “aspires to live without external threats,” she avoided accusations of imperialism or resource theft that have dominated recent exchanges, even as reports indicate dozens were killed in the U.S. strikes, including members of her former security detail.

President Trump, however, maintained an uncompromising stance, repeatedly asserting U.S. authority over Venezuela.

“We’re in charge,” he said, demanding “total access” to Venezuela’s oil and other assets to rebuild infrastructure such as roads and bridges.

Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump warned that a lack of cooperation from Venezuelan authorities could trigger further military action.

Despite Rodríguez’s appeals for dialogue and peace, Washington’s demands remain firm, and key political issues remain unresolved.

Trump said talks with Venezuelan officials have not yet addressed the release of political prisoners, a central demand of the opposition.
