By Zoila Palma: The YouTube account of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro went offline late Friday, according to state-run broadcaster Telesur, which claimed the platform “eliminated” the channel without explanation.
The account, followed by more than 200,000 subscribers, was used to broadcast Maduro’s speeches and clips from his weekly television program.
According to AP, Google, YouTube’s parent company, has not commented on the removal, though the platform’s policies allow termination for repeated violations, including spreading misinformation and interfering with democratic processes.
The move comes as tensions escalate between Caracas and Washington following the deployment of eight US warships and 2,000 Marines to the southern Caribbean last month.
While the US has described the mission as part of an anti-drug trafficking operation—reporting the destruction of three boats allegedly carrying narcotics—Venezuela has denounced it as a direct threat to its sovereignty and an attempt to destabilize Maduro’s government.
Maduro, accused by the opposition of stealing last year’s presidential election and indicted in the US on drug trafficking charges, remains a polarizing figure internationally.
