By Zoila Palma: Venezuela’s interim government has released several American citizens who had been detained in the country, U.S. officials said, marking the first known release of Americans since a recent U.S.-led military operation resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
The U.S. State Department welcomed the move, calling it “an important step in the right direction by the interim authorities,” though it did not provide further details on the identities or circumstances of those released,” Fox reports.
The announcement follows last week’s dramatic night-time raid in which U.S. forces captured Maduro, who is expected to face drug-trafficking charges in the United States.
Human rights groups in Venezuela say dozens of political prisoners have also been freed in recent days.
