By Zoila Palma: Venezuela has begun mobilizing troops, weapons, and military equipment in response to a growing buildup of U.S. warships in the Caribbean ordered by the Trump administration.
President Nicolás Maduro has accused Washington of attempting to overthrow his government and vowed that Venezuelans would defend their nation against what he described as American aggression.
The mobilization, referred to by officials as a “prolonged resistance,” reportedly involves more than 280 small military units tasked with carrying out sabotage and guerrilla-style operations, Fox reports.
The United States has intensified its naval presence in the region, with the USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group recently entering the U.S. Southern Command’s area of responsibility.
Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said the deployment aims to enhance efforts to detect and disrupt narcotics trafficking and other illicit activities threatening U.S. security in the Western Hemisphere.
Despite Venezuela’s show of resistance, reports indicate that its military faces severe resource shortages, with some commanders resorting to local food producers to sustain their troops.
