By Zoila Palma: Venezuela has ordered several international airlines to resume flights within 48 hours or risk losing their authorization to operate in the country, following widespread suspensions prompted by a U.S. security warning.
Major carriers including Iberia, Latam, Avianca, Gol, TAP, Air Europa, Plus Ultra, and Turkish Airlines halted operations after the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration advised pilots to “exercise caution” due to heightened military activity around Venezuela’s airspace, BBC reports.
The ultimatum, issued Monday by Venezuela’s aviation authority (Inac), has raised concerns within the global aviation sector.
The International Air Transport Association warned that revoking airlines’ clearances would further isolate a country already among the least connected in the region. IATA emphasized that the suspensions were temporary and that carriers intend to restore flights once conditions improve.
While some airlines such as Copa and Venezuela’s Conviasa continue to operate, international travel options have been sharply reduced.
The dispute comes amid escalating tensions between the U.S. and Venezuela, as Washington increases its military presence in the southern Caribbean in what it describes as a campaign against drug trafficking.
