By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, the election results in Venezuela are being disputed as both incumbent President Nicolás Maduro and opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez have declared victory.
In addition, official results are being questioned by international observers and foreign governments.
Venezuela’s national electoral authority said after midnight that Maduro won a third term with 51% of the vote, extending nearly 25 years of socialist rule.
However, independent exit polls and opposition claims suggest a significant win for Gonzalez, who reportedly secured 70% of the vote.
Maria Corina Machado, an opposition leader barred from office, also supported this claim.
According to Reuters, Gonzalez criticized the election process, alleging violations on polling day, but did not call for violent protests.
Isolated incidents occurred across Venezuela, including a death in Tachira state and clashes at polling stations in Caracas. The police intervened in protests in Catia, a traditionally pro-government area.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Washington had serious concerns that the results announced by the electoral authority did not reflect the votes of the people.
The authority is meant to be an independent body but the opposition says it acts as an arm of Maduro’s government.
