By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Saturday, Venezuela arrested 3 Americans, 2 Spaniards, and a Czech national, accusing them of being involved in a plot to assassinate President Nicolás Maduro, Politico reports.
Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello announced the arrests on state TV, alleging the group was part of a U.S.-backed scheme to destabilize the country.
The U.S. State Department confirmed the detention of 3 Americans but denied any involvement in the alleged plot.
“Any claims of U.S. involvement in a plot to overthrow Maduro are categorically false. The United States continues to support a democratic solution to the political crisis in Venezuela,” a State Department spokesperson said.
The arrests follow a contentious election in July, which Maduro claimed victory in but has faced allegations of fraud.
The election results led to widespread protests and a harsh government crackdown that resulted in over two dozen deaths.
Tensions have also risen between Venezuela and Spain, which recently recognized opposition leader Edmundo González, who is now in exile.
Spain’s support for González has further strained relations, with Venezuela recalling its ambassador and summoning the Spanish ambassador to address the situation.
Cabello also accused the detained Spaniards of having connections with Spain’s secret service and plotting to kill a mayor, a claim Spain has denied.
