By Zoila Palma: Tensions between Venezuela and Trinidad and Tobago escalated on Thursday after Venezuela’s National Assembly declared Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar “persona non grata,” accusing her government of supporting U.S. military aggression against the Bolivarian Republic.
The move, passed unanimously by lawmakers under Article 111 of Venezuela’s constitution, also endorsed President Nicolás Maduro’s decision to suspend all energy agreements with Trinidad and Tobago.
National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez described the declaration as a matter of “honour and sovereignty,” accusing Persad-Bissessar of betraying regional solidarity.
The decision follows increased friction between the two nations after the USS Gravely, a U.S. warship, docked in Trinidad and Tobago earlier this week — a move Venezuela claims is part of a U.S.-led plan to invade the country.
According to the Trinidad and Tobago Guardian, lawmakers in Caracas denounced Trinidad and Tobago’s cooperation with the U.S., calling it an act of aggression, while suspending joint gas projects that once symbolized regional cooperation.
Rodríguez and other legislators accused the Persad-Bissessar administration of aligning with “imperialist interests” and warned that Venezuela would no longer tolerate what it called “acts of hostility” from its Caribbean neighbour.
In a swift response, Persad-Bissessar dismissed the declaration as a “useless gesture,” saying it has no bearing on her government’s policies. “Venezuelans are fleeing by the millions — why would they think I would want to go there?” she said.
