By Zoila Palma: The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has confirmed a second case of New World screwworm in a calf in La Salle County, Texas, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the United States to six.
The latest detection was reported one day after officials announced the first case in the county. According to the USDA’s screwworm dashboard, five cases have now been recorded in Texas and one in New Mexico.
Federal officials said the USDA is working closely with the Texas Animal Health Commission to investigate and respond to the outbreak.
State and federal teams have expanded surveillance and response efforts, including epidemiological investigations, case tracing, additional testing and trapping in affected areas, and the release of sterile insects to help control the spread of the pest. Authorities are also conducting outreach to animal owners and maintaining coordination with veterinarians, ranchers, local officials and community partners.
The USDA’s latest data show that Texas accounts for five confirmed cases. Two cases have been identified in domestic cattle in La Salle County, while two additional cattle cases have been reported in Zavala County. Another case was confirmed in a domestic goat in Gillespie County.
A sixth case has been recorded in a dog in Lea County, New Mexico.
The USDA continues to urge animal owners to monitor their animals for signs of screwworm infection and to report any suspected cases to the appropriate authorities.
