By Zoila Palma: U.S. President Donald Trump’s freeze on development aid has crippled numerous programs in Latin America, impacting efforts to combat drug trafficking, hunger, corruption, and inequality, AFP reports.
USAID, which disbursed $1.7 billion in the region in 2023, has been a crucial source of funding for NGOs, public entities, and U.N. programs.
Experts warn that the freeze will lead to layoffs and program cuts, particularly affecting countries like Colombia, Haiti, and Central America, where aid is vital.
In Colombia, USAID funds support peace agreements and anti-violence efforts, while in Peru and Guatemala, NGOs are already scaling back health and social programs.
The freeze is expected to exacerbate issues like deforestation and crime in the Colombian Amazon, and cause hardship for vulnerable populations in countries like Colombia and Venezuela.
While some governments, including El Salvador and Mexico, criticize USAID as a form of U.S. interventionism, analysts caution that the aid freeze could drive Latin America to seek support from rival powers like China.
The loss of USAID funding is seen as a setback for U.S. goals in the region, including reducing migration and drug trafficking.
