By Zoila Palma:  The U.S. military carried out another strike on a suspected drug-smuggling vessel in the Caribbean on Thursday, but in a first for such operations, there were survivors among the crew, a U.S. official told Reuters.

The incident, which has not been previously reported, raises fresh questions about how the survivors were treated and whether they are now in U.S. custody. The Pentagon, which has described previous targets as “narcoterrorists,” has not yet commented on the strike.

Prior to Thursday’s attack, U.S. strikes on similar vessels off Venezuela had killed at least 27 people, sparking concern among legal experts and Democratic lawmakers about whether such actions comply with international law.

President Donald Trump has defended the operations as part of an ongoing war against narcoterrorist networks linked to Venezuela.

Videos released by the administration have shown vessels being obliterated, with no previous accounts of survivors. The strikes come amid a growing U.S. military presence in the Caribbean, including warships, fighter jets, and thousands of troops.

Tensions between Washington and Caracas continue to escalate as Trump confirmed this week that he authorized CIA covert operations inside Venezuela.

In response, Venezuela’s U.N. ambassador, Samuel Moncada, urged the United Nations to condemn the U.S. strikes as violations of international sovereignty. Meanwhile, the Pentagon’s surprise decision to shift leadership of counter-narcotics operations from Southern Command to a North Carolina-based Marine taskforce has raised eyebrows in military circles.
