By Zoila Palma: The U.S. State Department has revoked the visas of members of the Mexican band Los Alegres del Barranco after they projected the face of drug cartel boss Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera during a concert in Jalisco, Mexico.
The controversial act, which took place over the weekend, sparked outrage in Mexico and led to investigations in two states, AP reports.
U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau confirmed the visa revocations on Tuesday, emphasizing that “expression should be free of consequences” when it promotes violence.
Oseguera, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, has been linked to criminal activities in the region, prompting authorities to investigate whether the band’s actions were promoting violence.
The incident follows a larger debate in Mexico about the rise of “narco corridos,” a musical genre often criticized for romanticizing drug cartels. While some artists, including Los Alegres del Barranco, have faced cancellation of shows, others argue the genre reflects harsh social realities.
In response to the concert, Jalisco prosecutors have summoned the band for questioning, and the state has vowed to ban performances that glorify violence.
Some future shows have already been canceled, including a scheduled concert in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on April 4.
