International News: US-Iran attacks send oil prices higher as conflict escalates

By Zoila Palma:  The United States and Iran have exchanged attacks for the first time in more than a month, raising fears that the conflict could intensify after weeks of relative military calm.

The US said it struck two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island after observing Iranian forces preparing to deploy sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route.

Iran said it responded by launching missiles toward US military targets in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates, CNN reports.

The attacks pushed global oil prices nearly 3% higher as tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz intensified. Jordan said its air defenses intercepted eight missiles, while the UAE reported detecting a drone over its territorial waters and condemned the developments as a dangerous escalation.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said his country was not seeking war but would respond to aggression. Iran’s military also warned neighboring countries against allowing their territory or airspace to be used for US military operations.

The latest exchange comes as diplomatic efforts remain stalled, although Iran and Oman continue discussions on restoring maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
