By Zoila Palma: The United States has announced tariff relief measures for trucks and parts imported from Mexico and Canada, easing the impact of the 25 percent duties set to take effect on November 1.
The move comes as part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to balance its protectionist trade agenda with the realities of North America’s integrated supply chains, FT reports.
Under the new provisions, vehicles and parts that meet the standards of the 2020 United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) will only be taxed on their non-U.S. content, while many parts will remain tariff-free until a new methodology for calculating duties is finalized.
The administration also confirmed that it will extend the existing rebate program for U.S.-assembled vehicles, allowing manufacturers to reclaim up to 3.75 percent of the retail value of each car or truck through 2030.
The rebate, which had previously been limited to cars, will now cover trucks as well, giving automakers additional breathing room as they adjust to the shifting tariff landscape. A senior U.S. official said the goal of the changes is to “make it as cost-competitive as possible to produce these vehicles in the U.S.”
Despite the relief, major automakers such as General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis remain concerned about the broader effects of escalating trade policies, which have already introduced sweeping tariffs on steel, aluminum, and copper.
The companies rely heavily on cross-border supply chains that move components between the U.S., Canada, and Mexico multiple times during production.
