By Zoila Palma: The United States deported 177 Venezuelan migrants from its Guantanamo Bay military base to Venezuela on Thursday, marking a rare sign of cooperation between the US and the Venezuelan government.
After being transferred to Honduras, the group was flown to Venezuela on a Conviasa flight and received by Venezuelan Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello, who welcomed them as they arrived in Maiquetia, AFP reports.
This deportation comes after recent thawing of relations between the two nations, despite longstanding tensions.
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro said the handover was done at his government’s direct request.
The operation follows discussions with US envoy Richard Grenell, who brokered the release of US prisoners and facilitated the deportation agreement.
The move is seen as part of the US administration’s focus on immigration cooperation, with Venezuela also eager to end US sanctions.
