By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Pentagon confirmed that the US fired approximately a dozen interceptors in response to a barrage of Iranian ballistic missiles aimed at Israel on Tuesday, the BBC reports.
U.S. President Joe Biden stated that he had directed this active military support and spent the morning in the Situation Room addressing the situation.
The Israeli military reported that around 180 missiles were launched, with most successfully intercepted.
In a briefing, Maj. Gen. Patrick Ryder noted that two US Navy destroyers engaged in intercepting the missiles, which were believed to have been launched from Iran.
President Biden said the US was “fully supportive” of Israel after Wednesday’s assault.
“Today, at my direction, the United States military actively supported the defence of Israel, and we’re still assessing the impact,” he said.
“But based on what we know now, the attack appears to have been defeated and ineffective. And this is testament to the Israeli military capability and the US military.”
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed the strikes were retaliation for Israel’s operations against their commanders and allies, which has heightened tensions in the already volatile region.
