International News: US aircraft carrier group arrives in Caribbean

By Zoila Palma:  A powerful U.S. naval strike group led by the world’s largest warship, the USS Gerald R. Ford, has arrived in the Caribbean, BBC reports.

The deployment, ordered by President Donald Trump last month, comes amid a series of American strikes on suspected drug-trafficking boats and rising tensions with Venezuela.

According to reports, the U.S. has already carried out at least 19 such strikes in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific, killing 76 people.

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has accused Washington of “fabricating” a crisis to justify intervention and overthrow his socialist government.

The deployment has also strained relations with Colombia, whose President Gustavo Petro has condemned the U.S. actions, suspending intelligence sharing with American agencies until the strikes stop. Petro stated on social media that the fight against drugs “must be subordinated to the human rights of the Caribbean people.”

The U.S. Navy said the strike group entered the area of responsibility of U.S. Southern Command on November 11.

The force includes the USS Gerald R. Ford, several guided-missile destroyers, and support vessels — together hosting over 4,000 sailors and dozens of aircraft. Pentagon officials say the mission aims to “detect, monitor, and disrupt illicit activities” and bolster regional security.

However, with thousands of U.S. troops, aircraft, and even a nuclear-powered submarine now stationed in or near Latin America, the deployment marks one of the largest American military presences in the region in decades, drawing both regional unease and international scrutiny.
