By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The United States will officially leave the World Health Organization (WHO) on January 22, 2026, following a formal notice from President Donald Trump, the UN announced on Thursday, Reuters report.
Trump, who has criticized the WHO’s handling of the pandemic, confirmed the decision after being sworn in for his second term.
Under U.S. law, the country is required to give a one-year notice and pay its dues, which make up 18% of the WHO’s funding.
Trump’s withdrawal order also halts negotiations on the WHO pandemic treaty and will result in the reassignment of U.S. personnel working with the organization.
This move threatens key health programs, including those addressing tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS.
Trump had previously attempted to exit the WHO in 2020, but the decision was reversed by President Joe Biden in 2021.
