By Zoila Palma: The United States has raised concerns over the promotion of diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI), and gender ideology within U.N. agencies such as UNICEF and UN Women, Reuters report.
The U.S. has warned against these practices, threatening to cut funding, as President Trump and allies like Elon Musk push for a reduction in government spending.
During recent U.N. meetings, the U.S. opposed the inclusion of DEI programs and gender ideology in UNICEF’s routine documents. A U.S. diplomat argued that such policies violate American laws and promote harmful ideologies.
Ahead of the World Food Programme’s meeting, staff were advised to avoid terms like LGBTQI+ and SOGIESC in response to White House communications. The U.S. is the largest donor to both UNICEF and the World Food Programme, and its actions raise concerns about funding cuts to U.N. agencies.
UN Women also faced U.S. criticism for focusing on DEI, with the U.S. calling such efforts detrimental to women and girls.
U.N. officials emphasized their commitment to human rights but acknowledged the ongoing debate over these issues.
