By Zoila Palma: The United States announced Friday that it would cancel the visa of Colombian President Gustavo Petro after he publicly called on American soldiers to disobey President Donald Trump, CNN reports.
Petro made the remarks while addressing pro-Palestine supporters outside the United Nations headquarters in New York, urging the military to “obey the orders of humanity” instead of Trump.
In response, the US State Department condemned Petro’s comments as “reckless and incendiary,” stating on X that his actions prompted the revocation of his visa.
Petro, who had been in New York to speak at the UN General Assembly, criticized the move, saying it “breaks all the norms of immunity on which the functioning of the United Nations and its General Assembly is based” and accusing the US of failing to comply with international law.
Petro’s visit to the UN also included criticism of Trump over Gaza, where he accused the US of complicity in genocide, and called for accountability over US strikes on suspected drug traffickers in international waters.
