International News: United States resume cattle and bison imports from Mexico with new protocol

Posted: Monday, February 3, 2025. 9:33 am CST.

By Zoila Palma: The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced the resumption of cattle and bison imports from Mexico, set to begin in the coming days, KFGO reports.

Shipments were halted in November 2024 after New World screwworm (NWS) was detected in southern Mexico.

Following extensive talks, the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) and Mexico have agreed on a new protocol to ensure safe livestock movement.

This includes pre-export inspections and treatments in Mexico, with inspections at approved facilities in Chihuahua and Sonora before animals reach U.S. ports. Insect and tick prevention measures will also be implemented.

APHIS continues working with Mexico and Central America to control NWS, which has spread north through the region. The USDA is using sterile flies to help control the infestation.

Additional pre-export facilities are being considered to expand trade through more ports of entry.
