By Zoila Palma:  The U.S. State Department has ordered all embassies and consulates to halt new student visa appointments as it reviews plans to expand social media vetting for all student and exchange visa applicants.

A diplomatic cable, signed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, states that the department is reassessing its screening processes, which could significantly impact visa processing times, CNN reports.

The directive, effective immediately, suspends any additional student visa slots and cancels unbooked appointments, citing resource concerns. Consular sections are instructed to prioritize services for U.S. citizens, immigrant visas, and fraud prevention.

This move is part of the Trump administration’s broader crackdown on student visas, following previous revocations and legal battles over foreign student enrollment.
