By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The U.S. State Department has paused nearly all foreign assistance, including new aid and extensions, pending a review of its effectiveness and alignment with President Trump’s foreign policy goals, according to a leaked internal memo, BBC reports.
The move follows an executive order issued by Trump for a 90-day review period.
Exceptions to the freeze include emergency food aid and military funding for Israel and Egypt.
The memo directs US officials to stop work on ongoing aid projects until they have been reviewed and approved. The comprehensive review aims to ensure foreign aid meets Trump’s standards for strengthening, securing, and enhancing US prosperity.
This pause could significantly impact humanitarian programs globally, including those focused on water, sanitation, and shelter, as well as de-mining efforts.
The funding freeze may also affect Ukraine’s aid, which had previously received substantial military support.
The State Department has not yet commented, but the memo emphasized that the review is necessary to assess the effectiveness and consistency of current aid commitments.
