This surge surpasses the peak of the late 1800s and early 1900s, with total net migration during Biden’s tenure likely to exceed eight million people.
The influx includes both legal and illegal immigrants, with about 60% entering without legal authorization, the New York Times reports.
The U.S. population born outside the country reached 15.2% in 2023, the highest since 1890.
Several factors have contributed to the surge, including Biden’s more lenient immigration policies, turmoil in countries like Haiti, Ukraine, and Venezuela, and increased smuggling networks.
This surge has caused strain on local governments and become a hot political issue, with both parties criticizing the impact on communities and resources.
Despite concerns about competition for jobs and pressure on social services, research shows immigrants are generally assimilating and contributing economically.
However, high immigration has also led to slower wage growth for less-educated U.S. workers.
