By Zoila Palma: Panama has received its first U.S. flight carrying deported migrants, as part of an agreement to use the country as a stopover for expelled individuals.
President José Raúl Mulino confirmed Thursday that 119 migrants from countries including China, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, and Afghanistan were aboard the flight.
This is the first of three planned flights, with about 360 deportees expected.
The migrants will be housed in Panama’s Darien region before being sent back to their home countries, AP reports.
The move follows discussions between U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Mulino, who also offered Panama as a bridge to manage deportations.
Migration through Panama’s Darien Gap has dropped by 90% compared to last year.
