By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, the United States added a Guatemalan prosecutor and judge targeting President-elect Bernardo Arevalo to a corruption blacklist. Those listed are now ineligible for US visas.
Since the August Presidential elections in Guatemala, the country has faced political turmoil.
The electoral offices and those of Arevalo’s Semilla party were raided.
Guatemalans took to the streets to demand Prosecutors to respect President-elect Arevalo.
The inauguration is scheduled for January 14, 2024 and outgoing President Alejandro Giammattei has assured for a peaceful transition.
However, the Attorney General’s office was involved in the raid of the electoral offices.
The U.S. State Department said that judge Fredy Orellana and prosecutor Cinthia Monterroso “undermined democratic processes” by bringing politically motivated charges against journalists.
The two will no longer be eligible for US visas, with any current visas to be revoked.
President-elect Arevalo has also brought lawsuits against both of them as well as Attorney General Consuelo Porras and anti-graft prosecutor Rafael Curruchiche, both of whom were earlier hit by US visa bans.
