By Zoila Palma: Haiti is approaching a “point of no return” as escalating gang violence pushes the country toward collapse, the UN warned Monday.
UN special representative Maria Isabel Salvador told the Security Council that growing insecurity, cholera outbreaks, and gender-based violence are worsening conditions, particularly in Port-au-Prince. She urged immediate international aid, warning that Haiti could face “total chaos” without support, AFP reports.
Rival gangs battling for control of the capital have led to a 41% spike in homicides, with over 2,600 killings reported between December and February.
Gender-based violence has also surged, with collective rape making up most of the cases reported.
A Kenyan-led UN mission with 1,000 police officers has struggled to contain the violence, far short of the 2,500 originally planned.
Haiti’s UN ambassador, Ericq Pierre, said the country is “slowly dying” and pleaded for urgent global help to dismantle the gangs terrorizing the population.
