By Zoila Palma: Independent United Nations human rights experts have criticized escalating United States actions against Cuba, saying recent “threats and coercive measures” reflect patterns associated with colonial-era behaviour and undermine international law and stability, Jamaica Observer reports.
The experts warned that efforts to influence or alter the constitutional order of a sovereign state through coercion amount to conduct that conflicts with the principles of sovereign equality and self-determination under the UN Charter. They said such approaches risk weakening international peace and security frameworks.
According to the statement, concerns stem from a broader US pressure campaign against Cuba that includes longstanding economic sanctions, a decades-old trade embargo, and recent measures targeting countries that supply oil to the island. The experts also pointed to additional restrictions, including a fuel blockade and financial penalties affecting third-party states.
They further raised alarm over political rhetoric attributed to US leadership regarding Cuba, describing it as part of a wider strategy of coercive diplomacy. The experts said these actions are compounded by legal and military-related developments, including sanctions, indictments, and increased naval presence in the Caribbean region.
The UN experts urged Washington to halt all measures that they say threaten Cuba’s sovereignty and called on the UN Security Council and General Assembly to examine the situation urgently, framing it as an issue with broader implications for international peace and security.
