International News: United Nations condemns ‘Weaponisation of Food’ in Gaza, calls it a war crime

By Zoila Palma:  The United Nations has condemned Israel for what it called the “weaponisation of food” in Gaza, urging the Israeli military to stop firing on civilians trying to access aid.

The UN human rights office warned that blocking or restricting access to food and essential services could amount to a war crime, AFP reports.

UN officials criticized the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), a new food distribution initiative backed by the U.S. and Israel, as dangerous and degrading. Since its launch on May 26, over 410 Palestinians have reportedly been killed near GHF food points, with hundreds more injured.

UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini called the GHF effort “an abomination” and said it was failing to provide aid with dignity. He called for UN agencies to resume humanitarian operations in the territory.

The UN reiterated its demand for unimpeded aid access, warning that the entire population of Gaza remains at risk of famine.
