By Zoila Palma: The United Nations has sharply criticized recent U.S. military strikes on boats in the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific Ocean allegedly carrying illegal drugs from South America, AP reports.
U.N. Human Rights Chief Volker Türk called the attacks “unacceptable” and urged Washington to halt the operations immediately, warning that they may constitute extrajudicial killings under international law.
The condemnation, relayed by his spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani on Friday, marks the first formal rebuke of its kind from the United Nations regarding the U.S. campaign.
Shamdasani said the airstrikes, which have reportedly killed at least 61 people since early September, “violate international human rights law” as they occur outside any context of armed conflict.
She emphasized that lethal force should only be used as a last resort against individuals posing an imminent threat to life, not as part of anti-narcotics operations. “These attacks and their mounting human cost are unacceptable,” she said during a U.N. briefing in Geneva.
The U.S. has defended the strikes as a necessary measure to curb drug trafficking, with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirming that four people were killed in the latest attack in the eastern Pacific earlier this week.
President Donald Trump has described the campaign as a decisive escalation against drug cartels, though it has drawn criticism across Latin America.
