By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called on the United States to consider additional exemptions to its 90-day pause on foreign aid to ensure the continuation of critical humanitarian and development efforts, Reuters report.
The pause, ordered by President Donald Trump to review foreign aid alignment with U.S. policy, risks cutting off billions in life-saving assistance.
The U.S. is the world’s largest donor of foreign aid, contributing $72 billion in 2023.
Guterres’ spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, emphasized the importance of U.S. aid in supporting vulnerable communities globally and urged for more exemptions, particularly for humanitarian activities.
The U.S. State Department clarified the scope of the order last Friday, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio granting waivers for emergency food aid.
Aid organizations and lawmakers have expressed concern, warning that the aid freeze could jeopardize vital programs, including medical support and human rights protections.
Guterres looks forward to working with the new U.S. administration on delivering essential development assistance.
