By Zoila Palma:  United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Thursday delivered a sharp rebuke of countries that violate international law, warning that growing geopolitical divisions and unchecked abuses are eroding global cooperation, AP reports.

Addressing the U.N. General Assembly, Guterres said the world is facing brazen violations of international rules at a moment when collaboration is needed most.

As he begins his final year leading the United Nations, Guterres said the organization’s 193-member states are confronting a fractured global landscape marked by cuts to development and humanitarian aid.

He warned that these pressures are shaking the foundations of the international system and cautioned against efforts to undermine multilateral cooperation. “Some seek to put international cooperation on deathwatch,” he said, adding that the U.N. would not abandon its mission.

Guterres criticized leaders who selectively follow international law, saying such actions set a dangerous precedent and weaken global order.

He cited the illegal use of force, attacks on civilians and humanitarian workers, human rights abuses, unconstitutional changes of government and the silencing of dissent as examples of growing impunity. He also took aim at countries that fail to pay their U.N. dues on time.

In addition, the secretary-general condemned the concentration of wealth and power among the world’s richest 1%, calling it “morally indefensible.”
