International News: Union of European Football Associations threatens World Cup boycott over FIFA plan to sell stakes

By Zoila Palma:European football’s 55 national associations have unanimously rejected FIFA’s proposal to allow private investors to acquire stakes in a new commercial subsidiary overseeing the sport’s major competitions, warning that they could boycott FIFA tournaments if the plan is approved.

The decision was reached during an emergency virtual meeting chaired by UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin, BBC reports.

The potential boycott would cover FIFA competitions, including the men’s and women’s World Cups and the Club World Cup, with the first possible test coming in October during the Women’s World Cup play-offs.

In a statement, UEFA said its members “stand as one” in opposing the proposal, declaring that the World Cup “cannot be treated as an investment product” and insisting that “the World Cup is not for sale.” The Football Association also said England stands “shoulder to shoulder” with its European counterparts and fully supports UEFA’s position.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has proposed creating FIFA Forward Enterprise, which would allow third parties to make minority, non-controlling investments in the entity.
